I can do both effortlessly. I paid about 65 bucks for the whole package, and it was totally worth it. And the switch works flawlessly. Just plug everything in and it works.
The included instructions don't mention this, so here it is for anyone else who's frustrated. It's as simple as it can be: just run the included VGA/sound cables from the PC to the switch, and do the same for the XBox. I didn't know this (like I said, the manual mentions nothing about this) and I only found out by trial-and-error. Just press the button once to switch the monitor to the XBox; this will leave the sound source being the PC. Well, for example let's say I'm playing a game on my XBox, but I want to listen to music from my PC. There's no software setup at all. But if I want the sound and video both coming from the same source, then I can just hold in the button and it'll switch over completely to the same source.
If you just press the button, it'll switch over the monitor, but not the sound. What's more is that they include two quality six-foot VGA extension cables, with the sound cables integrated all into one cable. I thought the switch was defective and was about to return it until I tried holding in the button just to see what would happen. This is not a bad feature, but really is a good thing. It works beautifully, and the switch is very small and compact, which means it can be stashed anywhere within reach. The only start-up glitch I had was that I didn't know how the switch buttons worked.
Let's say you press one of the two buttons to switch over from one source to the other. Why. (In my case, I have two monitors hooked up to my PC, so while I'm using the main monitor to play on the XBox, I can use the secondary monitor to control the music from the PC).Anyway, it's as simple as either pressing the button once, or holding it in for a few seconds, depending on if you want to switch either or both video and audio. These things would easily go for 20 bucks or more each.
I bought this little switch to connect my PC and my XBox 360 to the same monitor and speakers. To switch both the monitor and sound to the second source, you have to hold the button in for about three seconds. Easy as pie.
Switching between PC's is fast and the resolution is not bad at all. I like having the USB ports on the front for the keyboard/mouse console connection. I am going to order a cable and will report back on that once I try it out. It is so nice to use only one keyboard/mouse for all four. The packaging was thick, but the plastic was pre-cut around the box, so it made it easier to pull apart to get the KVM out. The cables are heavy and feel well built.
Overall, a great purchase. I have four different PC's that I use in the office. The KVM was easy to set up and instructions were thorough. I am curious if this will support dual monitors.
AVOID THIS DEVICE IT IS JUNK AND IOGEAR WILL NOT SUPPORT IT. I put it away and then about a 9 months later tried it again and updated the firmware and it still does not work. I have owned this product for about a year. I hooked it up and the hot keys do not work. I am using a Dynex multimedia keyboard and when you click the and feature other than my computer it bring up a context window.
Called into IOGear tech support and after 40 minutes of waiting I got a voicemail that just said "Tech Support" and beeped. About 4 hours later I called again and after waiting about 25 minutes got a tech support person who told me to try re-connecting both computers again.
REQUESTING A REFUND` So I did and again only one machine works.
WOW. This is not a good product nor is the tech support worth the 40 minute hold time.
Tried setting it up and only one computer would work. Left a message, figured it might be lunch time.
When I use the USB ports in the front for the KB and mouse it freezes constantly for 1-3 seconds.
'Techs' at Iogear said to upgrade the firmware on the KVM, which I did. They're not even in India. No keyboard or mouse response. Keyboard, mouse and monitor work fine on the mini. I don't recommend using this 'switch'.
I got the KVM switch. Mouse moved just fine, but wouldn't click. Now, only the video works on the G3 side. especially when tech support is so lacking,,,oh,,, yes, they did tell me to switch cables, unplug and replug, shut down and start up,, blah blah. My setup is a G4 Mac Mini, and a beige G3--both of which work just fine on their own.
Same on the G3 EXCEPT no mouse click. And the tech 'wizards' at Iogear (who all use voice over and sound like fish gurgling in a toilet bowl) have no clue what to do.
